Thomas Mann- Death in Venice & Other Tales

-first published in 1912 as "Der Tod in Venedig"

***The main character of the novella is Gustav von Aschenbach a famous author in his early 50s that suffering from a writer`s block decides to take a trip to Venice hoping in a stimulating effect of this experience upon his work.
He falls in love with a young boy son of an aristocratic polish family that happens to be living in the same hotel.
Though he never speaks to the boy, much less touches him, the writer finds himself drawn deep into ruinous inward passion; meanwhile Venice, and finally the writer himself, succumb to a cholera plague.
The boy in the story ("Tadzio") is based on a real boy (WÅ‚adzio or Adzio, nicknames for the Polish name WÅ‚adyslaw or Tadeusz respectively) Mann had seen during a visit to Venice in 1911.
